Editorial

Dear readers,

Great news: last week we have been informed that smarti® was short-listed for the IFSEC Security Industry Innovation Awards again. We hope you can imagine how excited and proud we are that our product has been nominated for the second time in succession.

On another note we are really swamped with work this month, especially with the preparation for IFSEC 2007 and with the development of new smarti® units and updates, which will be launched in the next few months.

Nevertheless we still found enough time to put together and mail this newsletter to you. So you will be able to read all about the IFSEC nomination, the key features of the smarti® system and an article about the advantages of multimodal biometrics for access control. Please enjoy reading this newsletter and we hope to see you at IFSEC.

Best regards,

Your smarti® team

smarti® IFSEC Awards Finalist for the second time in a row

smarti®, a complete multimodal biometric access control and time & attendance solution, has been short-listed for the IFSEC Security Industry Innovation Awards in the Best new access control product category for the second successive year. Last year the smarti® Alcor unit was among the 6 finalists and this year the BSIA (British Security Industry Association) short listed the new smarti® Castor unit among the 6 best new access control products for the year 2007. This nomination shows that smarti® is a really great product and we are very proud of it. The nomination encourages us to put even more time & effort in to the development of this great product.

About the Castor unit: it is IP65 compliant, has an aluminium front casing, is in-wall or on-wall mountable, and is equipped with an 8" colour touch screen, integrated camera, a built in LED light, motion detector, microphone, speakers, central processing unit, built in storage, internal memory, communication ports and a relay I/O controller.

smarti® goes to IFSEC 2007

IFSEC 2007 - The leading global event for the security industry will be held next week in Birmingham, UK from the 21st to the 24th of May 2007. We will be attending this great event for the third time and we hope you will be able to visit us at stand 2084 in hall 6.

  • Totally customizable Time & Attendance evidence, connectable to any existent ERP solution. All events are tracked, with time stamped photos recorded and filed and can be easily retrieved for verification at any time.
  • Integration of multiple additional features (external device control, video messaging, video intercom, and video surveillance) into one compact device.
  • Complete protocol independency - it can be used to control almost any kind of external I/O device. Set up “to-do” tasks for all of your devices.
  • Customizable graphical user interface (GUI), currently supports over ten languages (additional translations possible).

Multimodal biometrics and access control

Common physical biometrics includes fingerprints; hand or palm geometry; and retina, iris, or facial characteristics, whereas behavioural characteristics include signature, voice (which also has a physical component), keystroke pattern, and gait. While some technologies have gained more acceptance then others, it is beyond doubt that the field of access control biometrics has gained a measure of acceptance. Biometric products provide improved security over traditional electronic access control methods such as RFID tags, electronic keypads and some mechanical locks. They ensure that the authorized user is present in order for access to take place. The user’s authorized card or password pin cannot be stolen or lost to gain access.

In order for the biometrics to be ultra-secure and to provide more-than-average accuracy, more then one form of biometric identification is required. Hence the need arises for the use of multimodal biometrics. This uses a combination of different biometric recognition technologies. In certain situations, the user might find one form of biometric identification is not exact enough for identification. This can be the case with fingerprints, where at least 10% of the population have worn, cut or unrecognizable prints. Multimodal biometric technology uses more then one biometric identifier to compare the identity of the person. Therefore in the case of a system using say three technologies i.e. face mimic and voice. If one of the technologies is unable to identify, the system can still use the other two to accurately identify against. Multimodal technologies have been in use commercially since 1998.
