Editorial
Dear readers,
July is here and with it the time for summer vacation has come. So if you have gone to enjoy your hard earned holydays or if you are planning to, we hope that you will have a great time and nice hot summer weather. The smarti® team has still not gone to vacation, at least not all of us, and in this issue of the newsletter we write about the advantages of biometrics over passwords, about the smarti® update v5.0 and more.
Best regards,
Your smarti® team
smarti® update
A new update will be available for download in the next few days. The smarti v5.0 update includes the updated help system, new icons for external aplications, a few optimizations of the system and a new external application called External input responder. This is an add-on, which allows interaction between the smarti® system and external devices connected to the system, which are not used in conjunction with the biometric stage and/or the External device manager.
This application reads the responses from text files which can be written by an external device or by a function defined from within the smarti®. It can also read responses immediate from the devices. If the response matches the desired input string the External input responder can trigger functions in a specific order and if needed also with time delays. You will be able to download the update from our partners pages in a few days.
User guide v1.6
Because of the new External application included in the smarti update v5.0, the user guide has also been revised; the v1.6 of the user guide will be available for download next week.
Biometrics vs. Passwords
People tend to use short and easy-to-remember passwords as they do not wish to be troubled each time they gain access to a system.
Biometric technology uses one or more physical identifiers to determine the individual’s identification. This may be a fingerprint, iris or retina scan, hand size, vein scan, signature, voice or face.
With biometrics, a biometric feature (face, finger, voice etc) is securely stored by the software and/or hardware during an enrolment stage. Once the user requires access to the system, a verification stage begins. In this stage, the individual who is present has his/her biometric identifiers compared against what is already stored on the database. If verified correctly, the user gains access to the system. There is no need to remember a long password by memory or write it down, where it could be compromised. (Read the rest of the article)
